  • Educating Yoga teachers about cancer through the study of the pathophysiology of cancer, the different types of cancer, cancer staging and grading, metastases, psychosocial issues, and cancer treatments—e.g., surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, and targeted and hormonal therapy—and common side effects—e.g., lymphedema, fatigue, pain, nausea, neuropathy, menopause, osteoporosis, sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, and grief
  • Reviewing cell biology and the organs and systems of the body for conceptual understanding
  • Discussing other common chronic illnesses with specific adaptation suggestions
  • invest in PayPal shares in Singapore Exploring adaptations in Yoga postures and movement, breathing practices, meditation, Yoga Nidra, and guided imagery for people with cancer and chronic illness
  • Studying the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali as they apply to illness and disease, while simultaneously examining one’s personal relationship with death, dying, and end-of-life issues
  • Reviewing and analyzing related research
  • Developing a professional voice and communications skills for working with medical personnel
  • Developing skills in (a) researching and preparing professional presentations and (b) giving and receiving evaluation and feedback

Teacher Bio
Sandra Susheela
 is the most senior YCat Yoga Therapy faculty member and is the senior trainer and qualifier for the full 300-hour YCat all levels training. Sandra is a highly recognized Integral Yoga teacher holding advanced training certificates in Stress Management, Integrative, and Mind-Body Therapies and Patient Navigation. Sandra has mentored and taught alongside YCat founder Jnani Chapman for the past 12 years and is committed to taking her YCat Yoga Therapy program forward since her passing in December.

Sandra was a Yoga teacher and stress management educator as well as a group support facilitator for Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation at Beth Israel Medical Center in NYC. She has also taught the YCat curriculum for the Mount Sinai Breast Health Resource Center and the NYC Ruttenberg Oncology infusion center. Sandra has offered Yoga therapy, Yoga education, and gentle adaptive Yoga classes for many trainings and retreats including for Integral Yoga programs, Romemu, Omega Institute, and the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, DC. In addition, she was one of the first trained Urban Zen Integrative Therapists in practice in NYC for their 2008 initiative and research. Sandra has also taught Yoga for the Special Child and at many retreats for Chai Lifeline in the Orthodox Jewish community.

Sandra is currently a Yoga Therapist in research at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing in Nashville. She has a passion for educating and empowering students and other teachers, and for creating a safe, compassionate space to explore healing through Yoga. Sandra is appreciated for her patience, presence, and dedication to the whole person. She has years of personal and professional experience and does her best to live by the quote, “Wherever you are, Yoga is there for you.” Sandra is grateful to her mentors Jnani Chapman and Dr. Lawrence LeShan for their pioneering work in mind-body medicine for people with cancer.

About YCat

Yoga Therapy in Cancer and Chronic Illness (YCat) is a professional, three-level certification program designed to train health professionals and experienced Yoga teachers to work safely with cancer patients at any stage of illness as well as people with stable chronic illness.

The goal of this program is to enable Yoga teachers to adapt traditional Yoga practices to meet the physiological and psychological needs of this population and to communicate effectively with medical personnel. At the completion of the program, Yoga teachers will be qualified to design and implement in and out patient wellness/stress management-based programs for people with cancer and chronic illness.

Participants receive certificates of attendance for each level completed and at the completion of all three levels graduates receive training certification in this specialty.

Wellness Retreats

The YCat Wellness Retreat provides comprehensive instruction and education: Learn and experience each aspect of YCat Yoga Therapy including: Movement exploration, Breathing practice, Guided Imagery, Relaxation, Meditation, Prayer and Sound in healing. This retreat can be a transforming process for people with cancer and chronic illness; with an all-inclusive program of physical healing-movement exploration and breathing practice, emotional healing-relaxation and sound, and spiritual healing-meditation and prayer.

Yoga Therapy

A 6-week course for people in cancer treatment and post-treatment, by certified Integral Yoga and YCat Yoga Therapy Teachers. This course is designed to reduce stress and improve coping during and after cancer treatment. They are based in Yoga and cancer research and clinical evidence.
